Poll Discovers Over 55s Keen on Tech Gadgets this Christmas
December 2012 - Information Technology
An online poll by YouGov on behalf of Kaspersky Lab has revealed that far from being content with the traditional book or jumper, over 55s are getting savvy about tech gadgets - tablets, smartphones and laptops are high on their Christmas Wish List this year.
A total of 41% of UK adults aged 55 and over are hoping that Santa will bring them a tablet, smartphone or laptop this festive season.
This trend has been attributed to the fact that older people are keen on gift gadgets that will keep them better connected to family and friends this Christmas, as well as surf the web, shop and bank from the comfort of their sofas.
Only 3% of this older demographic are hoping to receive socks for Christmas, while in contrast a surprising 21% of 18-24 year olds and 15% of 25-34 year olds said they would like to find a pair of socks under the Christmas tree.
In addition, 36% of 18-24 year olds and 35% of 25-34s want to unwrap a book as their present compared to 26% of 55 and overs.
Despite technology getting ever more popular amongst both the older and younger generations, Kaspersky Lab’s research has highlighted that security know-how has still yet catch up – 65% of smartphone owners, 16% of laptop owners and 50% of MacBook owners admitted they don’t bother to protect their device as they were unaware how this leaves their personal information easily accessible to cybercrime.
