55% of Brits feel unfavourable towards oil and gas industries: As energy costs continue to soar and oil and gas industries are never far from the headlines, a YouGov tracker has revealed an increase in negative perception by UK citizens towards oil, gas, mining, and extraction industries.
In October 2022, more than half the people polled in a YouGov survey said they felt unfavourable towards oil, gas, mining, and extraction industries (55%), with more than a third (34%) saying they felt 'very unfavourable'. This compares to 31% feeling 'very unfavourable' in May and under a quarter saying the same a year ago (23%). This was, of course, before the conflict in Ukraine and the subsequent hike in energy costs along with the deepening cost of living crisis.
Younger people feel more unfavourable to oil and gas industries, according to the tracker, with 38% of 18–24-year-olds saying they feel 'very unfavourable' in October 2022, along with 39% of 25–49-year-olds. This compares to a third of 50–64-year-olds (33%) and a quarter of those 65+ (25%)
The majority of respondents aged over 65 years said they feel 'neither favourable nor unfavourable' towards oil and gas companies (32%), compared with 16% of 18–24-year-olds and 22% of 25–49-year-olds.
Women are more likely to see oil and gas companies in a negative light shows the tracker, with 36% seeing them as 'very unfavourable' in October 22, a rise from 24% a year ago. This compares to 32% of men - up from 26% in October 2021.
Converative versus Labour voters
Conservative voters were less likely to see oil and gas companies in negative light, with the majority (35%) seeing them in 'neither a favourable nor non-favourable' way. Just 20% said they view them as 'somewhat unfavourable', according to the research, with 14% saying they view them as 'very unfavourable'.
This compares to 51% of Labour voters who said they see them in a 'very unfavourable' light and 21% who said 'somewhat unfavourable'. Just 16% said they view oil and gas industries in neither a postive or negative way.
