A third of people would be happy to have fracking site in their area: A survey has revealed that just 34% of people would be happy to have a shale gas site in their constituency, with 66% in opposition. This rose to 53% of Conservative voters in support of fracking in their area, while just 29% of Labour voters said the same.
When asked if they agree with the statement 'fracking is environmentally responsible', a third (33%) of respondents said they ‘disagree’ or ‘disagree strongly’, whilst 27% said they ‘agree’ or ‘agree strongly’.
Amongst Labour voters, 38% said they disagree strongly with fracking in their constituency, compared with 24% of Conservative voters.
The nationally representative survey by Omnisis polled 1,382 people in October 2022, finding that 68% trust Labour the most to 'protect and improve the environment', with just a third saying the same about the Conservatives.
A proposal by the current government to a ban solar panels on most farmland was opposed by the majority of survey respondents (75%), with both Conservative and Labour voters giving the same response (74%).
When respondents were asked about taking direct non-violent action to protect the environment in the UK, two-thirds were in favour (66%), with just 34% opposed to the idea. However, when the findings were broken down according to political persuasion, just 44% of Conservative voters were in support of taking non-violent direct action, compared with 74% of Labour voters.
When asked whether they believe nature is being protected in the government’s economic policy, 69% said 'no', rising to 77% of Labour voters. Two-thirds of Conservative voters answered 'no' (39%) to the question.
