Six in 10 Americans would support exporting large quantities of natural gas to Europe, according to survey
May 2022 - Oil and Gas
Six in 10 Americans would support exporting large quantities of natural gas to Europe: A survey of U.S. adults has found that 61% would be in favour of exporting large amounts of natural gas to Europe in response to many European countries announcing plans to reduce or phase out Russian imports. However, 37% were opposed to it.
The survey found 70% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were in favour of exporting large quantities of natural gas to Europe, along with 55% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning respondents.
The survey by Pew Research Center polled 10,282 U.S. adults in April 2022 and also revealed that while support for supplying more gas to Europe is relatively strong, Americans are also mindful of how such an arrangement might affect domestic gas prices. Two-thirds (67%) said that the impact on domestic gas prices should be a 'major consideration', with a further 25% believing it should be a minor consideration.
Another consideration was climate change, with around half (51%) saying it was a major consideration when deciding whether to supply large quantities of natural oil and gas to Europe, with 31% believing it to be a minor consideration.
While almost three-quarters of Democrats said that climate change should be a major consideration (73%), just a quarter of Republicans said the same (24%).
A third of respondents also said that the and the impact on the Russian economy should be a major consideration (33%), with slightly fewer (31%) believing it to me a minor one. However the majority asked this question said it was not a consideration at all (35%).
The survey also revealed that two-thirds of U.S. adults believe that investing in alternative energy sources such as solar and wind should be a priority for the future, with fewer than a third (32%) believing that the priority should be expanding oil, coal and natural gas production.
