41% think that research and development will benefit most from digital transformation: A recent survey has revealed that over four in 10 experts in the pharmaceutical industry believe that research and development will gain the most from digital transformation out of the internal departments.
 
The study by GlobalData polled 177 pharmaceutical professionals in November and December 2021 and uncovered that marketing and sales was thought to be second most likely to benefit from digital transformation, with 28% of respondents predicting so.
 
When asked about which technology they think will cause the most disruption to the pharmaceutical industry, four in 10 industry experts said that artificial intelligence will change the industry the most. In addition, just under a quarter (24%) said that the use of big data will disrupt the pharmaceutical industry the most.
 
Virtual and augmented reality, alongside cloud computing (1%) were thought to become the least disruptive to the pharmaceutical industry; with only 2% believing 3D printing will significantly disrupt the industry.
 
Of the change that digital transformation will bring, 9% predict that IT will benefit the most from, with 8% of the opinion that logistics will significantly benefit.
 
Furthermore, both procurement and administration were found to be least likely to benefit, with just 3% and 4% of respondents thinking so. Eight percent (8 %) felt that other internal departments would benefit the most from the change in the pharmaceutical industry.
 
Robotics, digital media blockchains and application programming interfaces were cited as the most likely technology to cause major disruption to the pharmaceutical industry by 3% of industry experts. 
 
In addition, cybersecurity was thought to be the most disruptive technology to the pharmaceutical sector by 5% of respondents, with 9% of experts citing social media.
