Dieters are opting for online slimming pills, instead of advice from their GP

Last year it was reported that almost half (48%) of 2,000 UK adults attempted to lose weight, with three quarters (74%) admitting that they are on a diet “all or most of the time.”

In addition, a quarter of those reported said they did not keep track of the number of calories they consumed in a day, yet around a third of those who do count their calories consume more than their daily recommended amount.

According to a report released by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Slimming World, a third of people resort to slimming pills to help them lose weight.

Although health shops and pharmacies stock slimming products, over two fifths purchased slimming products online to avoid speaking to a GP and 1,805 people said they still purchased slimming products online, despite ongoing public awareness campaigns.

Three quarters of those surveyed also said they were persuaded to go online to purchase slimming tablets and over half admitted they were more inclined to order slimming products without anyone else knowing.

However, almost two thirds said they had experienced side effects including bleeding, blurred vision and heart problems after taking a slimming tablet they had purchased online; although four fifths did not report their experience.

Commenting on the dangers of slimming tablets, MHRA policy maker, Lynda Scammell, said: “Slimming tablets can seem like a quick-fix solution to weight problems, but some of them contain very dangerous ingredients.”

She adds: “It’s essential you know what you’re buying online and what the risks are. If you don’t, your weight could end up being the least of your worries.”
