Accountants rated most approachable service provider for SMEs during COVID-19 lockdown: A survey of small business owners has found that of all the service providers used during lockdown, accountants have been the most supportive to SMEs.

The Biznography poll of 1,000 SMEs found that the support given to them from accountants was rated 'quite' or 'very' good by 59% of respondents, compared to an average of 52% for other service providers made up of landlords, banks, payment providers, enterprise software and communications providers.

One of the areas in which accountants scored highly was their availability throughout the pandemic, with 97% of the SMEs polled saying that when they attempted to contact their accountant by phone they were successful in getting hold of them, compared to 85% for other providers.

When asked how their accountant has helped them throughout lockdown, more than half (53%) said they have helped them to reduce costs and manage cash flow, which compares to 40% of other providers polled.

The survey also found that accountants have been the key go-to provider for many SMEs, with 82% of respondents saying they had contacted their accountant since the pandemic began, compared to 67% who have contacted their bank.
