SMEs concerned by new shared parental leave rules, survey finds

A survey by The HR Department of Bristol has found that 1 in 6 SME owners are worried about the effect new shared parental leave rules may have on their business.
The survey also found that 27 per cent of the respondents know about the new rules but are not sure about how they will implement it within their company.
Approximately 50 per cent of the respondents were aware of the changes and the impact it will make, and were not worried about the effect it will have on their company.
The findings showed that over a quarter of the respondents were not sure about the changes to the rules, whilst 17 per cent were worried about the impact it will have.
The shared parental leave rules, which came into effect on April 5th 2015, state that anyone who due to give birth or adopt, is entitled to share their leave with their partner as of Easter Sunday 2015.
The new rules state that after the first two weeks of compulsory parental leave by the mother or adopter, up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay can be split between a couple, provided that their employers agree.
Those who work in a factory are given four weeks compulsory leave, which translates to 48 weeks of leave and 35 weeks of pay, which can be shared under the new shared leave regulations.
Feedback on the new regulations has shown that the main concerns come from small companies, where the shared leave will have the greatest impact on resource.
A proportion of the respondents said that the new rules would have an impact on their recruitment policies, with one respondent claiming that they will begin to employ older people, to avoid being impacted by the shared parental leave changes.
