Professional services market research by online freelancer platform PeoplePerHour, which questioned 400,000 self-employed workers, has discovered the top entrepreneurial regions in the UK.

A clear North-South divide was revealed – nine out of the top 10 hotspots are in northern regions of England and Scotland, which are proving to be a creative hub for freelancers.

The cities crowned for having the biggest rise in self-employed people during the past 12 months were Manchester (163%) and Liverpool (162%), while the Yorkshire region also showed significant increases in their entrepreneurial population.

Scotland also featured prominently in the Top 10 list of booming entrepreneurial activity – Dundee has seen a rise of 131% and Aberdeen 116%.

In contrast, no cities in the South or East of England feature in the Top 10, while only one city in the Midlands, Leicester, has seen a major rise in freelancers (156%, the fourth biggest increase).

The capital has shown a 101% rise in self-employed people, although this relatively low figure is affected in part by the fact that London has such a high volume of people who live there.

Xenios Thrasyvoulou at PeoplePerHour commented on the findings: “The surge in people selling and buying freelance services is not a coincidence – Britain’s labour market is going through a fundamental change. Traditional employment is unlikely to return to pre-recession levels, as increasingly businesses want a more flexible workforce. They prefer to be able to hire on an as-needed basis, rather than having the cost not just of employing full-time staff but also the additional cost of having employees on-site.”
