A graduate two-month work experience at DJS…

21st April 2021 18:15

As part of a project with Salford City Council we took on a graduate who had studied at the local University for paid work experience.  This was part of the Council’s commitment to social value in the contract as well as our commitment to supporting research talent for the future.  We chose Alex from 17 applicants due in large part to her enthusiasm for research.  She was intended to join us for one month but ended up staying on for a further month.  We were delighted to be able to offer this role during this challenging time and wish Alex all the best for the future!

Alex’s feedback…

I started my work experience at DJS research in December 2020 to help out on a project for Salford City Council. This involved a range of data and analysis tasks, including a trip to the area to assess and photograph the High Streets we were studying. On this project I helped data check tables, data check reports and analysed qualitative data to identify themes and key pieces of information. It was fascinating to be able to attend the client meeting when the results were being presented to the client.

I also had the opportunity to work on a number of other projects and across other research teams. This included:

  • Helping create table specifications, checking tables and inputting data into a report. This helped me gain confidence using Excel and navigating large sets of data.
  • Learning about how to produce outputs that fit within the company’s style guide.
  • I attended workshops for a client within the culture sector and took notes.
  • I carried out desk research involving extracting information from the web and compiling it into a large data sets
  • I created social media posts for the company advertising the staff’s involvement in fundraising. I successfully created posts using the right tone to demonstrate a fun insight into the work/out of work community that DJS embodies.
  • I also produced ‘insight’ reports for the DJS website; I researched topical subjects with relevance and created a synopsis of the key findings and figures which were published to the company website.

In addition to the above, I had the chance to get involved with fieldwork and completed a range of telephone interviews within the call centre at DJS.

I have loved every minute of my two-month placement and I'd like to say a massive thank you to DJS Research for taking me under your wing. It has given me such a good insight into the world of market research and I have learnt so much.
