A survey, done by PriceGrabber, on 3,949 US shoppers has shown that clothing and accessories are the most popular Father’s Day gift choice for most American’s, with most fathers stating they would prefer quality time with their family.

The results, which were collated between May 9 and 28, 2014, indicate that around half of consumers plan on spending less than $100 on their present, with 25% intending to spend between $100-249.

Of those surveyed, 28% said clothing and accessories would be their number one gift choice, with one quarter (25%) going for quality time with their dad, 22% opting for gift cards and one fifth (21%) choosing practical gifts, i.e. tools, auto accessories or appliances.

Fathers, however, rank clothing and accessories as their least desired gift with just 20% saying they would like to receive one of the two. Quality time with their family came out on top (35%), with gift cards second (27%), followed by practical gifts with 23%.

Out of the 3,949-strong sample 18% said they were going to shop for tech-type gifts with tablets most favoured (34%) - followed by smartphones (32%) and laptops or computers (29%).

When asked how they planned on purchasing their gifts, almost three fifths (57%) intended to buy online. When this percentage was broken down, 48% said they would use their computer, 6% said tablets and just 3% would use their mobile phone.

Furthermore, just under one third (30%) admitted they would leave their shopping until the final week and 27% said they would gift shop two weeks prior.

Finally, when quizzed on retailing techniques that would entice them towards buying a certain product, free shipping came out as the most popular ploy (57%), with price cuts second (46%), followed by sales (41%) and coupons (40%), with "a limited quantity of the product available" last (3%). Almost one fifth (18%) said they would not be influenced by retailer tactics.
