Annual Survey Results of Top 50 UK Web Brands UnveiledAbout The Authors
22nd June 2012 08:30 - Retail
An annual market research survey of the 50 most popular and well known UK web names has shown that the dotcom firms that dominated the charts seven years ago have disappeared.
These include brands such as Kelkoo, Friends Reunited and Lycos.
Google, Yahoo, the BBC and MSN have retained their top five web brands position for the last seven years. Facebook only moved into the top five last year and continues to carry its number 3 place.
This year’s research results also revealed that social media sites now hold 10 places in the top 50, compares to just one place, Friends Reunited, in 2004. Twitter is currently at number 38.
Established brands such as John Lewis and Argos as well as media brands including the BBC, Sky and the Telegraph now account for half the places in the top 50 UK web brands.
A spokesman for UK Online Measurement (UKOM), the company which conducted the survey, commented: "Brands set up purely for the web have disappeared and it is 'back-to-the-future' offline brands that are doing well in 2011."
Information sites such as wikianswers, about.com and ehow are new entrants to the chart.
