A survey by deals website Travelzoo has found that 12% of Britons have not yet secured their accommodation for visiting the capital during the Olympics, promoting the prediction that London hotels will see a surge in last minute bookings.

The study also revealed that many people are planning to visit London to ‘soak up the atmosphere’ of the Games – for example, 60% of residents in Northern Ireland are planning a trip. In addition, many respondents claimed they were holding out for a last minute deal.

Stephen Dunk, Managing Director of Travelzoo Europe, commented: “It seems that people in the UK and Ireland are keen to stick around this summer and soak up the atmosphere even if they don’t have tickets for the Games. The relaxed approach to booking accommodation is surprising and indicates that hoteliers should be ready for a surge in last minute bookings this summer”.

The study further found that Britons are generally optimistic about the Olympics, with 47% looking forward to the Games and 72% saying it will benefit the country.
