Brick wallAlmost three-quarters of Brits believe the government is responsible for solving the UK housing crisis: A survey of UK adults has found that 72% hold the British government responsible for solving the housing crisis, with just 18% saying they believe that politicians are aware of how hard it is for younger generations to take a step onto the housing ladder. Far fewer people said that councils were responsible for solving the housing crisis, found the research (16%).

The Housing the Nation survey, published by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) surveyed the British public about their thoughts around housing issues in the UK.

The research found that just 55% of participants polled believe that finding a solution to the housing crisis is a priority for politicians, with almost three quarters (72%) saying they feel worry when they think about the prospects for future generations when it comes to buying a property.

Eight out of 10 survey respondents said they were open to, or not averse to, the construction of new homes in their local area in order to create more housing stock for people in the UK who need and want it.

The research also found that the topic of housing is so critical that two in five believe it will be a key factor when deciding who to vote for at the next election (40%).

Stewart Baseley, executive chairman at HBF, said: “People generally are accepting of the need to build more homes and elected representatives need to ensure they are representing all the people in their communities, not just a vocal NIMBY [not in my back yard] minority. Politicians need to step up and provide the leadership that will allow us to deliver the homes we desperately need.”
