Half Brits polled say housing crisis is one of the 'main issues' facing UK: A survey of British adults asking for their views of the country in a number of areas has found that more than half (51%) believe that the along with Covid-19 and Brexit, the housing crisis is one of the major challenges facing the UK in 2020.

The independent, nationally representative survey of 2,000 UK adults found that 62% believe that housing policy has been neglected not only by the current government, but by many previous administrations. It found that fewer than a fifth of respondents (17%) know who the current UK Minister for Housing is.

Bridging lender, Market Financial Solutions (MFS), who commissioned the survey, said that the government 'must focus on the housing crisis' over the coming months, and called for all those who work within the property market to do their part to help homebuyers.

The survey revealed that 19% of survey participants are contemplating purchasing a home before 31 March 2021, to make use of the government's temporary stamp duty holiday - something which MFS has been hugely positive for those wanting to get on, or move up the housing ladder.

When looking at respondents aged between 18-35, this percentage rises to 32%, which reveals the popularity of the incentive for younger buyers.

Other survey findings

The survey also revealed that almost half the survey particpants (49%) are satisfied with Chancellor Rishi Sunak's response to the coronavirus pandemic - with just 16% dissatisfied with his approach.

It also found that the 44% of the British public believes that the media likes to present a 'worst-case' scenario of issues such as Brexit and Covid-19.

Paresh Raja, CEO of MFS, said:

"While the government is often keen to stress just how important the issue is, events like Brexit and Covid-19 have obviously been prioritised.

“This a reflection of the complex challenges that the UK is facing at the moment."
