A nationwide survey commissioned by Family Investments has seen the Berkshire town of Wokingham crowned as the best place to live and bring up a family in the UK.

The market research examined the factors that parents consider to be most important, such as quality of schools, childcare provision, living affordability and crime levels.

Further reference points that contributed to the ratings included the availability of an existing population of parents with young children which naturally gives rise to child-friendly services, as well as facilities like parks and green spaces, leisure centres, zoos, farms, museums and theatres.

The rest of the top 20 towns for raising a family were dominated by counties in the south east and south west.

These were Woodley, Berkshire; Chulmleigh, Devon; Lightwater, Surrey; Shebbear, Devon; Oakham, Rutland; Bromley Cross, Lancashire; Bingham, Nottinghamshire; Chinnor, Oxfordshire; Yarm, Yorkshire; and Chandlers Ford, Hampshire.

Thereafter, the top 20 were rounded off by Bloxham, Oxfordshire; Malmesbury, Wiltshire; Wendover, Buckinghamshire; Bradninch, Devon; Topsham, Devon; Twyford, Berkshire; Dunnington, Yorkshire; Guildford, Surrey and Llangammarch Wells, Powys.
