Just under a third of 18 to 24-year-olds believe we should have a monarchy in the UK, finds survey ahead of the King's coronation
Just under a third of 18 to 24-year-olds believe we should have a monarchy in the UK: A survey conducted by YouGov for the BBC's Panorama programme has found that just under a third of 18 to 24-year-olds believe we should continue to have a monarchy in the UK (32%).
This compares to 48% of 25 to 49-year-olds and two-thirds of 50- to 64-year-olds (67%). More than three-quarters of people aged 65 and over said that we should continue to have a monarchy (78%).
However, overall, the survey findings suggest more people are in support of keeping the monarchy (58%) rather than it being replaced with an elected head of state instead (26%).
The survey polled 4,592 UK adults in April 2023, also finding that 54% of people believe the monarchy represents value for money (36% believe it does not). It also found that while 42% said they were ‘interested’ in the monarchy, 58% said they were not.
The purpose of the survey was to gauge the mood of the nation ahead of King Charles III's coronation on May 6th.
The survey also asked respondents whether the King is 'out of touch' with the British public, with 45% answering 'yes' and 36%, 'no'. This figure again differs greatly when looking at different age bands.
Just over half the people aged 65+ polled in the survey believe that King Charles in 'in touch' with the monarchy (51%), with just a third believing him to be 'out of touch'. This compares to just 16% of 18 to 24 year-olds who believe he is 'in touch' and a sizeable 59% believing he is not in touch with the British public.
You can watch Will King Charles Change the Monarchy on Monday 24 April at 8pm or on BBC iPlayer.
