Research by VisitBritain has uncovered the most popular current UK destinations according to foreign tourists.

The study analysed overnight stays at UK cities by overseas visitors in 2011 - London at 15 million and Edinburgh at 1.3 million retained their crowns as the two most visited urban destinations in Britain. These cities were followed consecutively by Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

Tourism moguls in Nottingham and Newcastle were also pleased by the survey results, since the fair cities beat the likes of Bath, York and Windsor to both achieve 14th place on the list of most popular tourist destinations, with 243,000 international visitors last year.

The VisitBritain poll also showed that visits to the East Midlands increased by 8% last year, bringing added revenue to the region.

Erin Huckle, of tourism body Experience Nottinghamshire, commented on their success: "Nottingham and the Sherwood Forest are grouped together so we get additional support from VisitEngland and they publicise our attractions and events. I'd like to think those figures also reflect the other work that's been happening – everything from our new website, which has been getting 50,000 visits a week, to our PR and marketing activity."
