Nearly three-quarters of women are concerned about finding a job due to discrimination: A recent survey by Pearson has revealed that 74% of women have expressed worries with regards to their ability to find a job, with 41% saying their worries are gender-based.

Furthermore, 30% of participants are concerned that their race may have an involvement in whether they are hired or not.

The study surveyed 1,000 working-aged women from all over the UK and found that 65% of those surveyed stated that they believe bias and discrimination are stopping women from finding jobs. In addition, 63% said they worry their age would stop them from getting their desired job in the correct sector.

When asked what other factors have contributed to their concerns, 42% of participants stated maintaining their mental health as a main stressor when deciding which job is right for them. Furthermore, 36% stated financial stability as a main reason for selecting certain positions over others.

Alongside financial stability for themselves, almost three-quarters (74%) of those surveyed said they have concerns about being able to find and obtain a job that is able to financially support themselves and their family.

Nearly three in 10 respondents (29%) stated they wanted to help their children with their online education and that any potential future employment would have to work around this. In addition, 49% said they worry about finding a job that would allow them to look after their family.

Freya Thomas Monk, senior vice-president for Pearson tests of English, said: “Coming out of the pandemic we see women rethinking their career paths, despite continuing to face both traditional and COVID-era challenges; such as ongoing gender bias and the mental health challenges of home-schooling during COVID, women are forging ahead to develop new skills and seek out employment options that are right for them.”
