A new survey by Family Investments has found the West Country village of Winkleigh, in Devon,to be the best place in the UK to bring up children.

The study was based on over 60 sets of data from a range of official sources, including crime statistics, childcare costs, the ratio of earnings to property prices and lifestyle factors such as proximity to green space, leisure centres and museums.

Winkleigh, situated between Dartmoor and Exmoor, has a combination of low crime figures, strong Key Stage 2 education results and a low average property price of £150,837.

In addition, the average salary there is £37,566, which is “well above” the national average of £24,170, and the village also boasts a broad range of shops and other useful amenities.

Head of Savings and Investments at Family Investments, Kate Moore, said that the poll results give the “first ever holistic picture of the best places for families to live”.

She added: “While we recognise that not everyone can lead a village life like the lucky residents of Winkleigh, we hope the factors we’ve identified will help families across the country when considering a new area to live. As parents, we might research local schools or house prices, but this new report brings all these elements and a great deal more together.”

Reaching second place in The Family Friendly Hotspots Report was the small town of South Pemberton in Somerset and the Lancashire village of Galgate was voted third.
