Market research commissioned by domestic cleaning company Bissell has shown that 40% of Britons say a New Year home detox will make them feel happier.

In terms of cleaning priorities, stains and messes are top on the list, followed by leftover cooking spills from the past week’s over-indulgence

The survey of 2,005 Brits found however that as busy schedules kick in once more, people are looking to cut corners. In total, nine in ten of those polled admit to only cleaning visible areas such as kitchens and living rooms, while bedrooms are often the messiest areas of their home.

European Managing Director at Bissell, Alistair Roberts, commented: 'With the amount of time spent in our homes over Christmas and the New Year, the increased traffic and general comings and goings during the festive period, our homes take quite a beating. It comes as no surprise that 87% of us only clean the areas of the home that are visible to us however it is the dirt buried deeper beneath the surface that we cannot see and can be harder to reach that is exposing our families to harmful germs and allergens.'

The research shows that many Britons would do well with a little extra help to get homes back in order for 2012.
