8 in 10 shoppers buy additional items when collecting Click & Collect orders: Highly convenient, and often costing less than home delivery, Click & Collect services are not only good news for the shopper, but highly lucrative for the retailer, according to a new poll which suggests eight in ten (85%) of us will go on to buy more items in store when we collect our goods.

The research, comissioned by Barclaycard sought to find out more about consumer shopping habits as well as the future plans of retailers. It consisted of surveys with 250 UK retailers (with more than 50 employees and who operate online) as well as 2,000 UK shoppers.

It found that a third of the retailers polled (34%) have seen profits in-store increase since introducing Click & Collect, with 87% saying it is their fastest growing delivery option and 90% planning to invest in the service over the next five years.

Turning to the consumer, the research found that two thirds of online shoppers (68%) are now choosing to collect their orders in-store, with 42% saying they use Click & Collect because they are not at home during the day. Fifteen percent said that Click & Collect works for them because they are not permitted to have goods delivered to their workplace.

The use of pick up lockers is also expected to grow in the coming year, with 68% of the retailers polled anticipating an increase in demand. According to the survey, 29% of consumers regularly use lockers or local shops to pick up their items.

The research also found that six in 10 consumers (60%) would like retailers to work together to offer a greater choice of possible pick-up loactions.

Kirsty Morris, Director, Barclaycard Payment Solutions, said: “Not only does Click & Collect offer merchants the opportunity to increase sales, our research shows it can improve the overall customer experience as a complement to online shopping, while reducing return volumes too."
