Half of consumers say they would accept even longer delivery windows for sustainable shopping: A global survey has found that sustainability remains a crucial consideration for online shoppers, with 49% reporting that they want to go green. Almost half (49%) the respondents polled for the survey said they would even accept longer delivery times to benefit the environment.
The Global Online Shopper Survey 2023 polled 11,500 shoppers in countries around the globe including Argentina,Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, UAE and USA. It also gathered insights from 10 European countries, which are available in a separate European Online Shopper Survey 2023. The countries selected were chosen as they "are all important players in the growth of the e-commerce world".
The surveys looked at a range of areas including cross-border sales, what shoppers are buying and how often, attitudes to delivery and returns and sustainability.
In Europe, 64% of individuals expressed the importance of sustainable online shopping. However, only one in five are inclined to pay extra for eco-friendly delivery services, with the expectation that retailers should bear the additional costs. On the other hand, 49% of European consumers are willing to accept extended delivery times if it results in a more sustainable delivery option.
On a global scale, a similar trend was found, with 70% of survey participants emphasising the significance of sustainability in their online shopping decisions, and nearly half open to waiting longer for their deliveries to be more environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, when given a choice, only 28% are willing to pay extra for a greener delivery service, found the research.
Interestingly, while 44% of Latin Americans said that sustainable e-commerce options are very important to them, just 22% of Europeans said the same. In the UK, 55% of respondents said that sustainability is important to them when they buy online, compared to 62% of American shoppers.
When it comes to paying more for a green delivery, just 16% of UK shoppers said they would be prepared to do so, one of the lowest proportions recorded (the same as Czech Republic, Netherlands and Canada - all 16%), with just Australia (14%) and Poland scoring poorer (13%).
