Market research conducted by money-saving website NetVoucherCodes.co.uk asked 1,000 women in the UK to name the most unromantic gifts they could receive on February 14th – men will be surprised as well as mortified by many of their answers.

While most ladies have been given a last minute Valentine's Day at least once, they have named and shamed the most off-putting presents that would cause their affections to wilt.

Topping the list of least desirable gifts was receiving shabby petrol station flowers with 20% of the overall vote, followed by cheap, tacky jewellery (17%), cuddly toys (16%), a bargain bin CD (13%), ill-fitting, unflattering underwear (11%) and a bottle of cheap perfume (8%).

The women surveyed felt that impersonal, inconsiderate gifts like stuffed toys and chocolate bars demonstrated a disappointing lack of effort.

The list of shame got worse, since the poll further found that other Valentine’s gifts which men somehow thought would show their partner how much they care were an ‘All You Can Eat’ buffet voucher’, a DVD of his favourite action films and tickets to watch his football team.
