A recent study commissioned by Gadget Show Live Christmas has revealed Britain is a nation of 'Goofs' - Gadget Obsessed Over Fifties.

The research showed that older generations now own almost as much recent technology as consumers who are half their age. More than 90% of over 50s own a digital camera, with 81% owning a laptop computer, 75% using a smartphone and almost a third playing on a portable games console such as a PlayStation Portable or Gameboy.

As many as 22% also own a PS3, Nintendo Wii or Xbox, and one fifth also use a fitness app.

Other gadgets that have also proved popular with the older generation are digital radios (owned by 64%) and Kindles (owned by 40%). 60% also own or use an MP3 player or iPod, with one in five owning a digital photo frame.

In-car stereos and SAT-NAV systems also seem to be a favourite of the generation, with 39% and 20% owning each respectively.

A very healthy 8% of respondents also said they owned a treadmill and 6% own a GPS running watch. One in ten also owns a home cinema system, with one in twenty now owning a 3D television.

Matt Hodgins, event director of Gadget Show Live Christmas, said: "This proves that gadgets hold as much, and sometimes more, appeal to older generations than younger ones. The over 50s often have more disposable cash for high end products such as tablets and flatscreen televisions, and have more time to enjoy them, too. "

"Older people can use the internet connection of a laptop, tablet, phone or PC to keep in touch with friends and family, shop online and keep abreast of current events, something which they could not do so easily in the past."
