Survey finds June saw low consumer confidence: Recent figures have uncovered that consumer confidence was low in June as the lead up to the EU referendum on June 23rd made people more pessimistic about the UK economy.Survey finds June saw low consumer confidence

The figures were taken from an established Consumer Confidence Index, which revealed that the main headline index remained at -1 in June.

The figures from the June Consumer Confidence Index were based on interviews which were conducted in the first two weeks of June. With this in mind, it is important to note that the figures cannot reflect the impact of Brexit on consumer sentiment – that will be outlined in July’s figures.

However, the figures did uncover an increasing pessimism about the general economy in the lead up to the referendum, with the index being 18 points lower than June 2015 in the run up to voting day. The researchers suggested that the index will be even lower in July’s index.

The research suggested that prior to the EU referendum there was an increase in confidence about personal finances. Further to this, up until the middle of June, confidence was more positive than that of 12 months prior.

Despite the index relating to personal finances forecasts over the next year increasing by one point, to eight in June, the index which measured expectations for the general economic situation over the next year has decreased by one point, to -14. This figure is 18 points lower than that of June 2015.

The major purchased index was found to remain the same in June at nine, which is seven points lower than June 2015.
