36% of Welsh school pupils say they do no additional 'frequent' sport outside of the curriculum: A survey of children who attend school in Wales has found that more than a third (36%) reported 'no frequent participation' in organised sport outside of the curriculum, which is an increase of eight percentage points since 2018.

The State of the Nation 2022 School Sport Survey polled more than 116,000 pupils from 1,000 schools in Wales between March 2022 to July. This included students from Year 3 to Year 11 inclusive and looked at attitudes, behaviours, and opportunities for young people in sport. It also surveyed almost 950 teachers.

Also revealed when looking at participation in organised sports outside of the curriculum was that 12% of pupils got involved once a week, with 13% getting involved twice a week and almost two in five (39%) participating three or more times a week.

The most participated in sport in a community club setting was revealed to be football (19%), followed by swimming (13%), rugby (10%), dance (8%) and running/jogging (7%).

More than half the pupils polled (54%) said they were members of a sports club in the last 12 months, a fall from 2018 when 59% said the same.

The survey also asked pupils if they volunteered to help with sport at school or within their communities, with a quarter sating that they do (24%). This is a fall from 32% who said the same in 2018.

The State of the Nation 2022 School Sport Survey also asked teachers a number of questions about their provision of PE for pupils with a disability, impairment or learning difficulty.

More than three-quarters said that they have accessible space, and are confident in modifying planned tasks and activities to meaningfully include disable pupils/pupils with an impairment or Additional Learning Needs.
