52% of regular match day football fans would return to watch their team before vaccine available: More than half the football fans who before the pandemic attended live matches, would return to see their team play live before a vaccine is available, according to research conducted on behalf of BBC Sport.

The Savanta ComRes survey polled 2,100 UK adult football fans between 20th and 24th November 2020.

More than half the respondents polled said that fans should be permitted to return to watch live games before a vaccine is available, however, 45% said they should not be.

Older fans were less likely to want to return to live games before a vaccine, found the research, with half the respondents polled aged 55+ saying that until a vaccine is available they will 'never' return to stadiums. This compares with 29% of supporters aged 35-54 and 14% of those 18-24 years.

Around half the respondents polled said they would return to see their team 'frequently' before a vaccine was available, while 12% said that they would 'never' return to regular live matches until there is one. Just 14% of fans aged 55+ said they would regularly return to live games before a vaccine is available, compared with 29% of 35-54 year-olds and 36% of 18-34 year-old fans.

When asked about how they feel about their team, almost three in 10 (28%) said they care more for their team now than than they did pre-Covid, rising to 36% for fans aged 18-34 years-old. This compares to around a fifth (19%) of fans aged 55+.

One in 10 respondents overall said they cared 'less' about their team now, than they did before the pandemic began.
