More than half of Brits planning to holiday in the UK this year, survey reveals
May 2018 - Sport, Leisure and Tourism
More than half of Brits planning to holiday in the UK this year: Forget far-flung climes and airport stresses – a recent survey has shown more than half of us are planning to stay at home this year rather than holiday in another country.
Fifty-seven percent of the 3,000 adults polled in the Travelodge’s annual holiday index said they would be enjoying a ‘staycation’ in the UK this year - with Cornwall topping the charts as the most popular destination.
Fifty-five percent of those questioned said they would be heading to a UK beach resort for their UK staycation, with 38% saying they’re choosing to stay on British soil in a bid to support the economy.
Those who aren’t planning on visiting the Cornish coast, plan to visit neighbouring Devon, or Bournemouth down on the south coast.
But beaches aren’t the only destination on the travel itinerary. A third of adults have set their sights set on a rural break, with the Lake District, Scottish Highlands and the Cotswolds being the most popular choices respectively.
How much will it cost?
Staying at home isn't the money-saver it used to be, however, with the average spend on a UK staycation up 37% on last year at £823. This is the highest figure ever recorded by Travelodge since its first travel survey, seven years ago when the total cost of a British staycation was an average of £399.
Not just one holiday for many of us
The research also revealed that Britons are enjoying multiple breaks - with a sizeable 85% saying they enjoy 3 UK staycations per year. Often, these are for shorter lengths of time – the average length of a staycation during the summer months, just a week.
