No summer holiday for 1 in 5 UK families this year, according to poll: A recent survey has found that a fifth of families in the UK will be going without a summer holiday this year.

The poll was conducted by MoneySuperMarket and questioned 2,000 UK adults about their holiday plans. Asking the one in five why they would not be taking a break of any kind this year, two-thirds said because of financial reasons, while a third felt the prospect of  organising a family holiday was "too much hassle". For a quarter of those polled, getting time off work was the reason behind abstaining from a summer break this year.

Staycation for two-thirds

The survey also found that two thirds were planning a break in the UK rather than heading overseas this summer. Reasons given for choosing a staycation over a trip to far-flung climes ranged from 'going abroad was too expensive' (45%) to preferring a less expensive UK break (35%), while a quarter said they always go on holiday in the UK and will continue to do so. A fifth of those polled said that the reason why they preferred to holiday in the UK was to remove the element of having to travel by plane with children in tow - a factor which they felt was too challenging.

Rachel Wait, consumer affairs spokesperson at MoneySuperMarket, commented: “Our research highlights that many families are feeling pressured financially over the summer, with cost cited as the top reason for both those that have opted to stay in the UK and families not going on holiday at all.”
