A poll of over 2,500 Britons by car hire comparison website has uncovered the rising trend of many people choosing to holiday in the UK and Ireland over going abroad.

Nearly a third of the survey respondents are now opting for the UK and Ireland as their favourite getaway destination, mainly because Brits are planning more holidays this year compared to 2011.

Approximately 50% of those polled are budgeting for extra holidays this year despite the poor economy, while only 1 in 5 people claimed they are cutting back on trips away and will be going on holiday breaks less compared to last year.

Managing Director of, Gareth Robinson, commented: "These results show that our customers are choosing to book holidays in the UK and Ireland in order to have more breaks away this year. When considering the national and global events surrounding the UK this year, such as the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics, it's not surprising that many people have realised the great holiday options on offer in the UK."

The market research also revealed that the second most popular holiday destination for Britons is Spain.

In addition, the Internet has become the preferred method for booking a holiday, with 74% of surveyants securing their trips online. This compares to 19% preferring to book face-to-face with a travel agent and only 8% doing so over the phone.
