York ranked as the best, large city to take a domestic holiday in the UK: A survey into favourite domestic holidays of Brits has uncovered York as the highest-rated, 'large' city to visit. The city was given an average score of 8.6 out of 10, scoring highly for food and drink offers and cultural attractions.

The study by Which? polled a selection of its members to find out which cities and towns are the best for a domestic holiday in the UK. The participants were asked to score 56 individual cities and towns based on: food and drink, accommodation, cultural sights, shopping, ease of getting around, lack of crowds and value for money.

Behind York, the second best rated city was Belfast, scoring 8.5 out of 10, followed by Edinburgh, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Despite London being one of the most popular destinations in the UK for those travelling from abroad, the capital ranked as the seventh most popular destination for UK domestic travel. Cultural attractions and the city's restaurants were noted as main reasons to visit.

The study also looked at the worst rated places for a city break, with Aberdeen scoring lowest (5.9 out of 10). Southampton and Plymouth, also had noticeably low scores, with 6.1 and 6.3 out of 10 respectively.

When looking at all places, regardless of size, Wells in Sommerset had the highest score of all places listed, with an average of 8.8 out of 10. This is despite being a comparatively small destination on the list.

Guy Hobbs, editor for Which? travel, said: “While the UK’s stunning coastal and countryside destinations have stolen much of the glory during the recent ‘staycation’ boom, our research shows just how much the UK’s towns and cities have to offer those searching for the perfect long weekend away.”
