The study by Transport Focus polled people for 12 weeks starting in April 2022, uncovering that only punctuality and crowding were more important to Brits than cleanliness. Furthermore, Great Northern ranked second in both these areas ( 95% and 85% respectively) behind c2c and Merseyrail.
When asked about their overall satisfaction with Network Rail, 85% of the North West and Central regions of the UK were satisfied with their journeys over the last four weeks; making it the least satisfied region in the country.
On the other hand, Wales and Western alongside Southern England reported 91% satisfaction with their Network Rail journey. In addition, Scotland had an average satisfaction of 89%, similar to Eastern England with 88%.
The poll also looked at correlations between age groups and the types of people using trains, finding that commuters were 5% less likely to say they were satisfied with their journey than those using the railway for leisure.
Furthermore, there were more people using the railway for leisure (32%) than for commuting (29%). One in five people travelled by train to see friends and family, with a further 3% using it for essential shopping.
In addition, older age groups are more likely to say they were satisfied with their journey than younger ones, found the research, with an average of 85% satisfaction amongst 18-34-year-olds compared to 94% for those aged 55 and over.
Rob Mullen, Train Services director for Great Norther and Thameslink, said: “It’s great to see our hard work is paying off, but we know we’ve got to keep that hard work going to ensure everyone’s health and comfort as we welcome them back to the railway.”
