68% of supply chain professionals believe the war in Ukraine will disrupt supply chains in 2023: A survey has uncovered that 68% of Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), manufacturers and retailers believe that the war in Ukraine will continue to disrupt supply chains in 2023, making it the top cause for concern for respondents working in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMA).

The second most prevalent concern for respondents was increasing energy and fuel costs (66%), followed by the impact that rising inflation will have on consumers (55%). Labour shortages (54%), input material inflation (36%) and a fall in supplier stability because of rising costs (31%) were also cited as concerns.

The survey, which formed part of a white paper by Reuters Events Supply Chains and UK-based global commercial real estate services firm JLL, asked respondents how they will respond to these challenges, with 81% saying they would have to pass the increased costs onto consumers, however, just 15% said they believe these costs will be 'substantial'.

The areas concerning respondents the least were 'port capacity restraints' (18%) and the 'fallout from Covid-19' -- which the paper suggests could be an indication that the 'tide may have turned' in these areas.

Looking at the year ahead, half the respondents polled said they predict that global demand will fall this year as people battle inflation and a cut to their spending power, with 42% sharing that they believe a global recession will further challenge supply chains in 2023.

Looking more at demand, 45% foresee worsening conditions in 2023, compared to 22% who think that demand will improve.

Logistics Service Providers are the least optimistic about growth in 2023 (22%), found the survey, compared to almost twice the proportion of manufacturers and retailers (42%).
