69% of Scottish people are ‘satisfied’ with public transport: A survey which among other things looked at the travel habits and transport choices of people in Scotland has revealed two-thirds feel ‘satisfied’ with the service they receive on public transport – a decrease from 72% the previous year.
The annual Scottish Household Survey polled 9,810 adults and found that public transport was used for 11% of journeys, while the majority of travel was still by car. Sixty-five percent of journeys were made by car or van (breaking down to 52% as the driver and 13% as a passenger). Second to travelling by car was walking, with 21% of journeys made on foot, while cycling made up just 1.5% of journeys made in 2017.

The survey also revealed the total number of passengers travelling by ScotRail trains in 2017-18 was 98 million – up 4 million from the previous years with 94 million recorded.
People earning higher wages were also found to travel by train more, with 42% of those who had travelled by train in the past month bringing in a salary in excess of £40,000 per year. For those earning less than £10,000, just 23% made a journey by train in the last 28 days.
When it comes to taking the bus, younger passengers were more usual, with two thirds (68%) of 16 to 19-year-olds polled said they had made a journey by bus in the last month. The figures drop to just over half of those in their 70s (53%) and 43% of Scottish people in their 80s.
The survey also revealed that travel by electric car is sounding a more attractive proposition to Scottish people with 41% saying they would consider buying an electric model in the future – an increase of 5% on last year’s survey.
