DJS Research Get Up and Go this January for the Thomas Theyer Foundation

January saw the launch of our month-long fundraiser for our Charity of the Year,  The Thomas Theyer Foundation

We've just completed our first company fundraiser of the year, the DJS Get up and Go Challenge - and we're pleased to announce that it went pretty well!

Back in December, DJS staff were challenged to take part in a month-long self-monitored distance activity to raise funds for The Thomas Theyer Foundation - to start on New Year's Day and end at the close of January. As well as raising money for our Charity of the Year, the challenge also offered the added bonus of helping us work off our festive excesses. Win, win!

Thirty-five DJS Research staff  signed up to take part, including Managing Director, Danny Sims.

The challenge

Each person taking part chose a distance they felt they could complete (distances from 25- 150 miles) and set about running, walking, cycling and even skipping their way through January, submitting their distances each week so they could see their progress on our internal Get up and Go Challenge leaderboard.

It snowed in January, the temperatures dipped below zero, but it did not phase our team of intrepid challengers - not one bit!

We set out with a target distance of 2675 miles - which would take us from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back, - and then back again. An impressive feat by any standards, but not quite ambitious enough for DJS staffers it seems, who actually recorded a monumental distance of 3,181 miles!

That would take us as far as Lake Winnipeg in Canada; to Chicago in the USA or way beyond Europe as far as Mongolia!

Collectively we raised  £363 made up of entrance fees and an additional £57.50 thanks to Sergio Cardo Zabala who also asked family and friends to sponsor his efforts. Special congratulations are also in order for Sergio who surpassed his target of 150 miles to record a personal distance of 191 miles - which also makes him the top mover in our first-ever Get Up and Go Challenge. WELL DONE!

He wasn't the only one to surpass their personal targets though - 31 staff members who took part in the challenge were also target breakers!

As well as recording our distances, we also took some amazing photos of our travels, which included the stunning countryside around the Peak District close to our Strines offices, London, Edinburgh - and even Elba Island in Italy!

To commemorate their achievement, those who achieved their individual target were presented with a medal engraved with their distance, by Alex Noden, who suggested and organised the challenge and achieved an incredible personal distance of 129 miles herself.

Why we took part in the challenge - supporting the Thomas Theyer Foundation

We wanted this challenge to be accessible to all and the uptake by staff at both our Stockport and Leeds offices has proved its popularity.  In addition, it’s supporting employee well-being by motivating staff to get out and be more active, and importantly, it chimes brilliantly with the ethos of The Thomas Theyer Foundation in terms of being active outdoors.

A massive WELL DONE to everybody who was involved!
