Beer is America’s favourite alcoholic drink, survey finds

A recent survey of 1,000 adults from across the United States, has found that beer is now America’s favourite alcoholic drink, as a result of a Beer is America’s favourite alcoholic drink, survey findsgrowing trend for craft brews.

Of the respondents, 44 per cent said that beer was their chosen drink in social situations, as opposed to 27 per cent who chose wine and 25 per cent who chose spirits.

A large proportion of the respondents said that they prefer to drink beer because of its taste, “casual appeal” and because it’s cool in warm weather.

The survey showed that American Ale was the most favoured style of beer, closely followed by Light Lager, Speciality Beer, English Pale Ale and Pilsener.

As for the craft beers, Samuel Adams Utopia was ranked in first place with runners up including Sierra Nevada: Pale Ale, Dogfish Head: 90 Minute IPA, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout and Anchor Brewing/Anchor Steam.

Rick Zich, President of Mr. Beer – who conducted the survey – said of the findings: “It's clear that beer continues to gain in popularity, especially with the new flavours and styles being introduced by the craft beer revolution.”

The Mr. Beer survey presents very different findings to what was discovered during Gallup’s survey in 2013.

The Gallup survey indicated that beer consumption among 18 to 29 year olds fell from 71 per cent during 1992 to 1994, to 41 per cent between 2012 and 2013.

Beer is America’s favourite alcoholic drink, survey findsAccording to the Brewers Association, craft brewers sold approximately $14.3 billion worth of beer in the year 2013, which was a 14 per cent increase from 2012.

93 per cent of those surveyed claimed that they had not brewed their own beer before, although, of the 7 per cent who had tried home-brewing beer, 91 per cent said that they enjoyed doing it.

Of those who said that they had brewed beer before, 62 per cent said that they liked to create their own flavour of beer.

Around 50 per cent of the home-brewers claimed that the beer they brewed themselves tasted just as nice as shop-bought beer.
