Survey finds Iceland and Lidl are home to the best value Christmas dinner: According to an annual taste test, those who are looking for the best value Christmas dinner and nibbles should visit the discount supermarkets, Lidl and Iceland, who boast the best mince pies and prosecco.
The taste test revealed that Iceland’s six Luxury Mince Pies were tastier than 24 other brands’ pies as a result of their "lovely crisp and buttery pastry case" and "juicy mincemeat". At £1.50 per pack, Iceland’s mince pies even beat Harrods’ and Selfridges’ pies to the top spot. As well as this, Lidl’s Allini Prosecco Spumante was voted as the best bargain prosecco at just £5.29 per bottle.
The blind taste tests are due to be featured in Good Housekeeping magazine's December edition and also uncovered that Iceland’s Luxury British Whole Brined Turkey with Orange & Thyme Butter was the top of its class at just £4.95 per kilogram. As well as this, Iceland’s Luxury Outdoor Bred Pork, Honey and Rosemary Parcels stuffing were also voted the best at just £3 per 300g.
The research also revealed that Marks and Spencer were voted top of the Christmas pudding category with its The Collection Belgian Chocolate & Orange Star Christmas Pudding at £12. The participants of the taste test decribed the pudding as "delicious twist on a traditional pud". Marks and Spencer narrowly beat Iceland’s £6 Luxury 12-month Matured Christmas Pudding to the top spot. M&S also won in the mulled wine and stilton taste tests.
It was noted that Marks and Spencer was the retailer which appeared the most frequently in the survey and featured in the top 10 of the 12 categories in the survey.
In the Champagne category, Ocado.com's £19.99 Champagne Faubert Brut NV was voted the best.
