23% of Britons will not turn their heating on this winter: A recent survey into how the UK public are planning to deal with the cost-of-living crisis over winter, has uncovered that nearly a quarter of Brits are planning to not turn their heating on when the colder weather sets in. This figure rose to 27% when there will be children at home.

The study by the Liberal Democrats polled the British population about their upcoming energy usage after Ofgem announced that the energy price cap would rise to 80%; meaning, on average, the UK household will pay £3,549 per month for gas and electric.

Since 1957, less than 7% of the average UK family’s spending has gone on energy bills, with the figure being around 4% in 2017. However, this is expected to rise to 11% in October, with families on lesser incomes being most effected.

In addition to this rise in household bills, Ofgem predicts the cost of gas and electric will rise to £6,616 for the average household by April 2023 – almost a 400% increase from winter 2019.

A further YouGov study into the matter uncovered that 47% of Conservative voters are in favour of renationalising the energy industry; with 53% of Labour voters from the North East and Midlands with the same opinion. Furthermore, according to the survey, the British public have more trust in Labour’s ability to combat high inflation, than they do in the Conservative party.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: "Huge progress has already been made, with the number of homes with an energy efficiency rating of C or above at 46% and rising, up from just 14% in 2010. This is benefiting tens of thousands of homes and delivering average savings of £300 a year on energy bills."
