Pipes41% of heating installers are now installing renewables: A survey conducted by Polypipe Building Products has revealed several key findings about the attitudes and behaviours of domestic heating installers towards renewable energy, with 41% of installers who historically have focused on oil and/or gas installations now installing renewables.

The survey also found that of the heating installers who still mainly install oil and/or gas, 37% are currently looking into more renewables and associated training, and 38% said they’re considering transitioning to renewables.

Looking at the drivers for renewable adoption, the research highlighted that a third of respondents said their customers are passionate about reducing carbon emissions, with 29% saying that their customers only ask for renewable energy. Almost a fifth of respondents said they are interested in renewables to reduce energy bills (18%).

The survey asked engineers questions around training, with 30% reporting that they would like to receive heat pump training but cannot find a course, with a quarter saying they don’t feel like there are enough available (24%). One in five respondents said they have not pursued any renewables training, with 19% sharing that they dislike heat pumps or believe in better alternatives. Furthermore, 13% said they lack interest in renewables altogether.

Of those who have engaged in training, 17% said they feel confident in heat pump installations after training, while 21% have undergone training but haven't seen much customer demand yet. In addition, 22% said they are booked on for training in the near future.

Dan Love from Polypipe Building Products, said of the research: “While it’s positive to find that many engineers are undergoing training and carrying out more renewable installations, it is clear that a lack of training has been an issue for many. Hands-on advice will play a huge role in supporting installers through the transition to renewable energy and we know that a number of manufacturers are investing heavily to provide this education.”
