68% of people polled in global survey are in favour of solar energy: A global survey has revealed a significant preference for solar energy among over two-thirds of the world's population (68%). This preference stands in stark contrast to the notably lower public support for fossil fuels, with just 14% in favour.

The research by Glocalities, in partnership with advocacy groups Global Citizen and The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, surveyed over 21,000 people across 21 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, India, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States. It was conducted between January and June 2023.

Whilst solar energy had the most global support, wind energy followed closely behind (54%), trailed by hydropower (35%) and nuclear energy (24%). The fact that just 14% of respondents expressed a preference for fossil fuels, could suggest a significant shift towards renewable energy sources.

This survey's findings align with other studies, emphasising the strong support for renewables in both Europe and the United States. For instance, the EU's recent Eurobarometer conducted from May to June 2023 revealed that an overwhelming majority of Europeans favour substantial investments in renewable energies like wind and solar power (85%).

Greater support for fossil fuels in the U.S.

The research also found that while solar energy was the power source favoured most by Americans (58%) there was also greater support for fossil fuels, with almost a quarter of respondents saying they are in favour – well ahead of the global average.
