Renewable energy is top choice for investors in 2020: A survey asking UK investors where they are most likely to invest money in in 2020 has revealed green energy as the top choice.

The survey of 1,000 people who had an average of £50,000 to invest was conducted by ETF provider, GraniteShares, and revealed that 30% of investors placed renewable energy as their top choice for long-term investment.

Across all the age groups polled, those aged 55 to 64 were most keen to invest in renewables (35%), with the sector also being the top choice for investers aged 65 and over (33%). Those aged 35 to 44 years were the least interested in investing in the sector (26%).

Technology was the second most popular sector for investment overall, with more than a quarter (28%) selecting it as their top choice. It was chosen by 31% of 25-34 year-olds and 32% of 45 to 54 year olds, with 34 to 44 year-olds showing the least enthusiasm (22%).

In third place overall was property (25%) followed by gold (22%) and then biotechnology (19%) pharmaceuticals (19%) and cannabis (17%). At the bottom of the table was the automotive industry (7%), industrials (8%) and retail (8%).

The most favoured sector for 35-44 year-olds was property, while those aged 55 to 64 years said pharamaceuticals. Young investors showed a greater affinity to modern technology brands although tech as a whole was favoured by young and middle-aged investors, found the study.

As well as differences between age groups there were also regional differences. In the south west, investors selected renewables as their top investment choice, whilst in the south east, technology was the first choice. Banking and insurance was most popular in the north east, whilst gold was the top choice amongst investors living in the north west.

The research found that 12% of the investors polled sought to place their money in companies that were environmentally or socially responsible. The sectors they were most likely to invest in were across renewables, cannabis and biotechnology.
