Summer 2022 saw 38% less rainfall than the average over the last 20 years: A recently released study by the Office for National Statistics into weather patterns in 2022 has uncovered that the UK received 38% less rainfall between June and August than the average. In addition, Summer 2022 averaged temperatures of 1.1 degrees Celsius more than the average of the last 20 years.

The Office for National Statistics gathered data from an array of sources and reported on weather trends over the past year. The study also aims to predict major events in the near future; with the Met Office predicting sea levels to rise by 11cm by 2030 and 19cm by 2050.

The drastic changes in weather are caused by global warming, which has been caused by greenhouse gases being put into the air. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy estimates that the UK put 400 million tonnes of greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere in 2020. In addition, agriculture accounted for 11% of greenhouse gases in the UK.

One of the ways to combat global warming is to plant trees, with Scotland planting more than any other region of the UK. However, the number of trees being planted in the UK has fallen significantly since the 1970’s. In 1976, over 28 thousand hectares of trees were planted in the UK, with less than 14 thousand hectares in 2022.

Farmers are trying to combat global warming by thinking harder about their crops and which animals they keep; 64% of farmers consider greenhouse gases to be an important factor when selecting crops and animals. Furthermore, 58% of respondents have taken action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
