UK retail and hospitality sectors identify energy costs as their top concern, according to a recent survey: The survey revealed that, although rising energy costs and energy efficiency goals are considered major priorities for the UK retail and hospitality sectors, only a minority have taken substantial steps to reduce energy costs and enhance energy efficiency.
SEFE Energy surveyed 500 energy decision-makers in the UK towards the end of last year to understand the most significant external impacts on their businesses. While more than two-fifths (47%) of the retail and hospitality companies report that rising energy costs are a top concern, and over half (53%) say they are aiming to lower their energy costs, the data shows that only a quarter (27%) of these businesses have implemented energy-saving policies in the past 12 months.
Importantly, the findings reveal that nearly three-quarters (70%) of the businesses polled would welcome more guidance on improving energy efficiency, which suggests that, despite concerns about rising costs, a lack of knowledge and information is hindering their efficiency efforts.
When asked where they currently seek advice on energy products, just over four in ten (45%) retail and hospitality businesses report using energy comparison sites as their primary resource, while a similar number (42%) go directly to their energy providers. Less than a quarter (23%) consult an energy broker or consultant, and around one-fifth (15%) utilise AI-powered assistants for advice. Interestingly, although fewer businesses are using AI for guidance on energy products compared to more traditional methods, over half (54%) of those surveyed said they would be interested in adopting AI-powered energy solutions to enhance energy efficiency.
SEFE acknowledges that many businesses are struggling to find the guidance they need and encourages them to seek more tailored advice from energy consultants while gaining insights into their energy consumption and habits from their suppliers.
