44% of Gen Z say over-filtered social media posts have made them feel less self-confident: A survey into how social media has affected children and young adults has uncovered that 44% say they have become less self-confident due to social media posts that are filtered. On the other hand, 44% of Gen Z said they have learnt to become more confident in how they look as a result of social media.
As a way for the younger generation to protect themselves from filtered social media posts, 22% said they have unfollowed accounts posting over-filtered images.
The study by Channel 4 polled 1,500 Brits in an attempt to understand how marketers better communicate with young adults and children. In addition, the majority of those aged 24 and under believe social media is an overall positive in their lives.
The emergence of social media has also made the younger generation less tolerable towards people with differing views, found the research, with- a quarter saying they don’t have time for people who don't share the same opinion as them.
The study also uncovered that three in five Brits aged 13 to 24 view their parents as role models; with a further 25% saying their grandparents and teachers are also role models.
The study looked into other differences between the generations, with half of over 25s saying they believe social media to be a main contributor to stress. However, just 35% of Gen Z respondents said the same.
Instead, the younger generation cited other issues, such as climate change and the cost of living crisis, as bigger contributors to their stress levels.
