Coffee next to laptop62% of arts PRs have considered leaving the arts industry in the last 12 months: A survey has revealed that more than 3 in 5 people who work in the arts in either a PR role or a role with PR responsibilities in the UK have considered leaving the industry in the last year.

Breaking it down further, a quarter said they have 'strongly considered' leaving (25.64%), with 35.9% saying they have not considered it at all.

The new survey of arts PR professionals was launched by Mobius in 2023 and will be conducted annually going forward, with the purpose of 'taking the temperature of arts PR across the country'. The findings revealed insight into how the cost of living crisis has affected arts PR, as well as a reduced need for arts coverage being a concern for those working in the industry.

The research found that regional broadcast was reported as the least difficult to place compared to national and regional reviews, features and news stories.

Responsibilities and feeling valued

When asked to outline the top five areas they spend the most time on in their role the survey found 'PR Campaigns' were the top answer given (75%), followed by media relations (72.5%) strategic planning (57.5%), copywriting and editing (52.5%) and events, conferences and press nights (45%) Other answers given included project, account and client management (35%), marketing (32.5%), crisis/issues management (32.5%) social media relations (30%) and influencer relations (25%).

Respondents were asked about how valued they feel in their role, with 95% of respondents saying they feel valued. A third of participants said they feel 'somewhat valued' (32.5%), while 42.5% said they feel 'very valued' and 20% 'extremely valued'. Just 5% said they feel not so valued.
