Four in ten WhatsApp users say they can’t live without the messenger this Christmas: Forget presents, mulled wine and mince pies; a survey has revealed that 41% of WhatsApp users feel they could not live without the messaging app this festive period.

The poll of 2,023 UK adults conducted by YouGov also asked users how they would be using the app over the holidays. And it found that a fifth of users (21%) would not only be typing messages out to friends and family via the service this Christmas - they would also be making use of its video capabilities to speak to and see loved ones.

Asked what they would be using WhatsApp for this Christmas, 28% said it was essential for discussing present ideas, while almost a quarter (24%) said they will use it to plan the Christmas lunch. A fifth (20%) said they will communicate travel plans and logistics, while 10% expect to use it to have a moan about family members when the festive family tensions get too much.

When it comes to group chats 65% of users say they will be chatting about Christmas, with 31% anticipating using the app to swap stories about Christmas parties and other festive nights out.

The research also found that 3% of users will use the messenger to pretend to call Santa as a tool to encourage better behaviour from their children.
