Survey Discovers Marketing Industry Has Most Driven Professionals

A survey of more than 2,000 UK workers by recruitment company Robert Walters has found that marketers tend to be the most confident, ambitious and hard working in their jobs.

The study looked at career and professional decisions within 11 different industries. In total, 84% of marketers are confident that their work has a broad impact on business success, compared to only 68% of bankers who feel the same way.

In addition, marketers are among the most hard-working of professionals, with more than 24% working more than 50 hours a week and 27% regularly working at the weekend without any extra pay or recognition.

This contrasts with 11% of bankers who work more than 50 hours a week and 16% who work on weekends.

When it comes to ambition, the survey also found that two thirds of marketers say a lack of career progression is the main reason they will move on from a role.

Director of Marketing Recruitment at Robert Walters, Tim Gilbert, commented: “With marketing often perceived by non-marketers as a support function and, by the same rationale, not as important as more directly revenue-generating teams, the results say a lot about how marketing professionals are valued by and within their businesses. In these challenging times, the value of marketing as a function in retaining and attracting new business is absolutely essential.”
