Social media appsTwo-thirds of social media managers say they have too many responsibilities: A survey of over 3,800 social marketers has revealed interesting insight into their experiences, with two-thirds reporting feeling that they have too many responsibilities. The overall picture painted by the research also indicated that social media marketers feel overworked, overwhelmed and underappreciated, juggling too many tasks and with many feeling misunderstood by bosses and underpaid for what they do.

The 2023 Social Media Career report was conducted by Hootsuite, also finding that about half feel they don’t have time or the budget to do their job well.

More than half said that the people they report do not understand social media (56%) with almost half respondents saying they don't believe they are paid what they are worth and two-thirds saying they work 40 or more hours a week. Interestingly, however, more than three-quarters (77%) said they are happy to be working in social media.

Mental health findings

The survey found that 57% of social marketers reported having at least one symptom of a mental health condition, with 41% of respondents overall (both with and without symptoms of a mental health condition) also reporting that their work has a negative impact on their mental health. The survey also asked what employers are doing to offer support. It found that 61% are able to work flexibly while more than two-thirds have a hybrid or fully remote working arrangement, with a third reporting receiving benefits that include support for their mental health. Many social media marketers reported working overtime, with 48% of respondents in this category saying their work compromises their mental health.

The research also found that more social media marketers who work for an agency have been promoted than those who work in-house (65% vs 45%).
