The Challenge

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harms. GamCare’s Young People’s Service can support anyone aged 18 and under across the UK who is either at risk of or experiencing harms because of gambling.

GamCare required research to explore young people’s understanding and perceptions of gambling as well as to understand the kind of support they might want with regards to gambling related harms. The purpose of the research was to help GamCare improve the support offered through the Young People’s Service.

The Approach

An exploratory qualitative approach comprising:

  • Interviews with outreach and education staff members
  • 28 online friendship pair interviews with young people aged 11-18 to explore awareness and perceptions of gambling
  • 1 interview with a young person with lived experience of gambling related harms
  • Follow-up online community with the young people to review specific elements of the Young People’s Service website and support offer, using the Recollective platform. 

The Results

We identified perceptions and experiences of gambling amongst the young people and the fact that awareness of specific support for gambling related harms was low.

We provided an insight-led report with detailed feedback on the resources currently available and actionable recommendations for improvement.
